The histology laboratory provides histology services for research on the Washington University campus. In addition to offering routine fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining of tissue specimens, decalcification and a full range of special stains for diagnostic and research needs are available. The laboratory is fully equipped to prepare paraffin or frozen embedded tissue for histological and immunohistological study.

The histology and microarray core laboratory is a full service facility which is directed by Dr. Jim Lewis. It is staffed by Autumn Watson (Supervisor) and Vernetta Laton. It is located in the Kingshighway Building of the medical campus, 2nd floor, room 2445. Lab services are available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All projects submitted are completed in the order received using the submitted date. Under normal circumstances, the estimated completion time for each project submitted is 7 to 10 working days. Times may be longer for extremely large cases, time demanding cases, and during major holidays. Requests for rush cases will be accommodated to the extent possible with the approval of Dr. Lewis. He can be reached at jlewis@path.wustl.edu.

Tissue Microarrays

The Core can generate Tissue Microarrays from formalin fixed, paraffin embedded patient tissue blocks obtained in collaboration with the Division of Surgical Pathology. Alternatively, investigators may provide their own source material. Custom arrays may be constructed for immunohistochemical or in situ hybridization analysis of over 400 individual tissue specimens that can be represented on a single slide.
